Dactylopius coccus

These hoodies were purchased from Everybody.World and are made of 100% recycled cotton. They have been dyed with cochineal, or Dactylopius coccus, an insect native to North and South Americas. Cochineal was originally used by Mexican Indigenous peoples to make pigment for paint and to dye textiles and feathers for wear. When the Spanish came to Mexico, they brought the desert-dwelling insects back to Europe, where they were used to dye the uniforms of English soldiers. (Source)

I am thankful to the native Mexicans for the opportunity to use this dye in my home, in Vermont.

After being dyed over my stovetop, I block printed the tri-floral design, which features three of my favorites: a zinnia, a globe thistle, and an icelandic poppy, and stitched them onto the hoodies.

Each one of these hoodies was hand-dyed, so color and tones vary per sweatshirt. This is a part of my loose, experimental process, so your hoodie might be slightly mis-matched in tone to your sweatpants.

Care: Natural dyes will face with excessive washing and exposure to sunlight. Please wash sparingly, inside-out, and store in a dark drawer or closet.
